Dressing for Family Holiday Photos

It doesn’t have to be overwhelming - we’re here to help!

Deciding what to wear for holiday family photos can be just as challenging as getting everyone together for a photo session! These photos are, after all, commemorating a year in your life, will be sent to friends and family on holiday cards, and grace the walls of your home to be cherished for years to come.

Read on for expert styling tips to prepare for a fabulous, fun, stress-free session!

A beautiful, neutral casual look for the holidays!

A beautiful, neutral casual look for the holidays!

Fail-proof formula.

Put most of the family in varying shades of a neutral color such as ivory, white, grey, pewter, navy, deep purple or classic black. Once the foundation is set, you can add a coordinating brighter color throughout (especially with accessories such as belts, shoes, bows, or ties!).

Start with mom.

As moms ourselves, we understand the impulse to “figure it out” for everyone else and end with ourselves. However, it’s way easier to visualize the whole look once you know what outfit looks like and mom is the PERFECT place to start. Once you have an outfit that makes you feel confidant, you can fill in the blanks for everyone else.

Don’t match - complement!

The day of all white shirts and khakis or jeans are gone! We recommend colors that complement each other, so go for lights (light blue, gray, blush) or darks (navy, white, and ivory). If you want colorful looks, then select vivid color schemes like jewel tones!

Solids vs. Patterns

Patterns are great and we love incorporating those! If you want to bring visual interest through patterns, have one person wear one pattern (i.e. a striped shirt), another person wear a different pattern (floral or polka dots), and a third person in all solids. Think in trios! For non-patterned visual interest, include textures and different fabrics such as chambray, tweed, chunky knits, lace, faux fur, or tulle.

If it all feels too stressful, trust us - you can’t go wrong with everyone in solids!
